Overview

The Head of Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) Department is responsible for providing strategic leadership and direction in developing, implementing, and overseeing environmental, health, and safety programs across all MOBIS Alabama properties and personnel. This position ensures compliance with regulatory requirements and promotes a culture of safety and environmental stewardship.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions

 (To perform within this position successfully, the incumbent must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Other duties may be assigned.)

  • Develop and implement EHS policies, procedures, and programs to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, as well as industry best practices.
  • Provide strategic guidance and direction to senior management on EHS issues, initiatives, and goals.
  • Lead and mentor EHS staff, fostering a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and professional development.
  • Conduct regular audits and assessments to identify EHS risks and opportunities for improvement and develop action plans to address findings.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate EHS considerations into business processes, projects, and decision-making.
  • Coordinate continuous improvement efforts to ensure Health and Safety Objectives are in compliance with the Company vision and mission
  • Serve as the primary liaison with regulatory agencies, industry groups, and community stakeholders on EHS matters.
  • Monitor emerging EHS trends, technologies, and regulatory developments, and recommend proactive measures to mitigate risks and enhance performance.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA; EPA and Alabama Department of Environmental Management as well as ISO 14001/45001 objectives.
  • Oversee incident investigation and root cause analysis processes and ensure timely and effective corrective actions are implemented.
  • Prepare and present EHS reports, metrics, and performance indicators to senior management and the CEO & President.
  • Manage EHS budget, resources, and vendor relationships effectively to achieve departmental goals and objectives.
  • Write annual (MBO) goals and objectives, develop action plans to ensure timely results, and hold Team Members accountable, conducts mid-year and end-of-year performance evaluations, coordinates corrective action as required.
  • Ensure that the Human Resources Division Head is immediately notified of all accidents and safety concerns and produces appropriate compliance reports
  • Direct Departmental Managers to ensure that Company EHS Objectives are met
  • Monitor and or initiate recycling efforts to reduce the carbon footprint and improve the plant’s environmental impact
  • Monitor new construction projects to ensure compliance with Federal & State regulations and safeguard assigned personnel
  • Responsible for managing overtime working hours of assigned staff

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Yes , Subordinates include one EHS Managers and EHS Specialists assigned to each shift

Basic Qualifications

(The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or ability required and preferred for this position.)

 

Required Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Health and Safety, Engineering, or related field. OR
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in environmental, health, and safety leadership roles, five plus years of Supervisor or Management experience
  • Demonstrated track record of developing and implementing effective EHS programs and initiatives in a complex organizational environment.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate at all levels of the organization.
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a focus on data-driven decision-making and continuous improvement.
  • Proficiency in EHS management systems, software applications, and reporting tools.
  • Ability to travel occasionally as needed.
  • Experience in a high-volume manufacturing automotive environment is preferred.
  • Experience with SAP is preferred.

Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Profound understanding of state and federal environmental, health, and safety regulations
  • Expertise in OSHA and EPA standards
  • Familiarity with ISO 14001/45001 standards and audit expectations
  • Aptitude to assess adverse conditions and make decisive decisions
  • Capability to establish annual performance goals and objectives
  • Competency in reading and interpreting new and existing construction blueprints
  • Experience in departmental budgeting and manpower planning
  • Strong interpersonal, problem-solving, and conflict resolution skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel

 

Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations

  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or equivalent professional certification preferred.

 

Working Conditions

  • This position primarily operates in an office setting but may require consistent walking and standing on the shop floor. Responds to in-plant emergencies 24/7.
